The modern Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1908 and then came to be adopted by many countries around the world. In many nations it is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
Besides taking Mom out for lunch or dinner, flowers, jewelry and fragrances are the most common gifts. But, if you are in these cities, here are some alternatives!
Hong Kong is the home of the dessert buffet in the most elegant of settings, particularly luxury hotel lobbies. While the British tradition of high tea lives on with a mixture of sweets and savories, the dessert buffet satisfies the purist who enjoys a tasting menu – and feast for the eyes – of the most enticing desserts. While one of the most popular – accompanied by a classic trio in the afternoon and jazz by night – is the Tiffin Lounge at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong, the Ritz-Carlton in the same city has announced a Sweet Soirée French Dessert Buffet, nightly from 8:30-10:30 PM, a sweets nightcap! For a dessert buffet that’s more casual, Japan has a nationwide chain of them –Sweets Paradise. But even if you won’t be in this neck of the woods, how about baking a selection of miniature desserts for Mom?
If your mother likes museums and galleries, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has an ongoing exhibit entitledIslamic Art Now: Contemporary Art of the Middle East. Described as the first of a two-part program, “this exhibition features approximately 25 works by artists from Iran and the Arab world, including Shirin Neshat, Susan Hefuna, Lalla Essaydi, Mitra Tabrizian, Mona Hatoum, Hassan Hajjaj, Wafaa Bilal, Barbad Golshiri, and Youssef Nabil, among others”. And whatever Mom’s preferences are in the creative domain, why not spend an afternoon at an exhibit with her on Mother’s Day?
Last but not least, pamper Mom with a bespoke Gift Box. At Senteurs d’Orient, we offer a variety of choices, and each gift can be made to order, incorporating your mother’s favorite fragrance.
But whatever you decide on, make sure it’s something Mom would really want, but usually wouldn’t think of getting for herself!
