Essential oils provide a range of therapeutic benefits and can be used to relax, invigorate, soothe, heal and purify. We’ve shared the details about a number of key scents and their properties, but did you know there are multiple ways to enjoy their effects? Here are some of the different methods that you can explore with your essential oils:

Inhalations

Fill a bowl with hot water and add a few (3-4) drops of essential oil. Breathe deeply while keeping eyes closed. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and, almost immediately, the brain. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are also carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system. Thus, inhaled essential oils can affect the body through several systems and pathways.

Diffuser (Candle or Electric)

The easiest way to safely diffuse essential oils into the air is with an electric diffuser. All you have to do is follow the simple instructions, such as fill the container with pure water, add several drops of essential oils, choose the time setting and voila! – you can start enjoying the healing scents in your home. Using candle diffusers is a bit trickier as you have to watch the water levels.  You may also try placing a recipient containing water over a radiator in winter, or use a humidifier or an oil burner. Always be careful!

Compresses

Place a drop or two of essential oil on a moist cloth and maintain on affected area for a few minutes. You can also add 5-10 drops of the essential oil into a bowl with 1-2 cups of water. Swish around and use a soft cloth to dip into the bowl. Wring it out so no water drips from it and apply it to the area where you need relaxation or comfort.  Hot compresses are helpful for backaches, rheumatism, arthritis, abscesses, earache, and toothache. Cold compresses are helpful for headaches, neck tension, sprains, and strains.

Massages

Dilute 20-60 drops of essential oil in 100ml of base oil of your choice, such as sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, or grape seed oil. Use this for an aromatherapy massage that is as invigorating for your senses as it is for your muscles. Of course, remember to be mindful of your body’s reaction to these oils — lower the amount if you are trying a new oil or if you have sensitive skin.

Baths

Aaaah, the classic. Blend 5-10 drops of essential oil with a vegetable base oil of your choice. Pour this into a warm bath to unwind! Although it gives off a wonderful aroma to add the oils to a running bath, the oils would evaporate at a very high rate, and for this reason it is best to add the oils after you have run the bath. Let the escapism begin!
